About Us
Our Spiel
Our name, Sileni, comes from Greek mythology, known for good wine, good food and great company. We've kept that spirit, minus the togas. You won't find a grand speech here, just the result of 25 years spent figuring out what matters and leaving out what doesn't.
More stuff about us
James Hillard
Winemaker - Hawke's Bay
James brings more than 20 years of winemaking know-how to Sileni, with experience spanning NSW, Italy, Gisborne, the Yarra Valley, and now Hawke’s Bay.
He cut his teeth with John Cassegrain in Australia and Ricci Curbastro in Franciacorta, making sparkling wine, before running the wine programme at Tairāwhiti Polytechnic and leading production at Indevin. James joined Sileni in 2022.
A long-time show judge with a steady hand in the cellar, he knows when to guide the process - and when to let the fruit do the work.
Helen Morrison
Winemaker - Marlborough
Helen Morrison is our Marlborough Winemaker, with more than 20 years of experience, including many years as Senior Winemaker at Villa Maria.
Her focus has always been on making quality wine the right way - with sustainability and innovation at the core. At Sileni, she leads the Marlborough cellar, working with the fruit to capture the clarity and drive the region is known for.
Straightforward, experienced, and confident in her craft, Helen knows how to get the best from both vineyard and winery.
Hawke's Bay
Shaped by five rivers, Hawke’s Bay is a patchwork of soils, more than 25 types across clay, limestone, sand and gravel. That diversity drives contrast and character across every varietal we grow here.
Wide plains, stony soils, and coastal air, Marlborough’s mix of riverbeds and elevation delivers Sauvignon Blanc with clarity and lift. It’s no accident it’s now the country’s largest wine region.
