Why we love our Triangle Merlot
Merlot is arguably the king of red wines here in Hawke’s Bay and is one of Sileni Estates flagship grape varieties. It was first planted here on the Lyon’s block back in the early 90’s to produce a standalone varietal and to be a key blending component in our red blends here in the Bridge Pa Triangle.
What makes our Triangle Merlot different you say? It is our soils. (the oldest here on the Heretaunga Plains). The Merlot vines are planted on volcanic topsoil that has a mixture of clay, basalt, oxidised iron with a sprinkling of pumice. These elements give the soil a red hue known as red metals which is what the Bridge Pa Triangle is known for. With 20 plus years of vine age and the outstanding climate of this sub-region, this creates the perfect conditions for Merlot grapes.
Our 2018 Triangle Merlot showcases rich savoury plum, spice and berry fruit aromas. Dark mocha and dark fruit flavours follow through to the palate, with a silky, dark chocolate finish. The perfect accompaniment to a Sunday roast beef or braised duck.
